After an ear infection, two rounds of antibiotics, two ENT visits, and a hearing test, we decided it was time for Livy to get a set of tubes in her ears to help drain the fluid that just wouldn't go away. Dr. Skedros, who was also Carson's doctor, did the surgery at Lakeview Hospital. We have been there for four of the six previous surgeries we have done on Carson & Kaylee and really like it there. It is very quiet and they let you wait in a room rather than one big waiting room, so you have a bit more privacy. They also usually give the child a stuffed animal or blanket to make them happy and comfortable. We got a cute pink blanket for Livy (which Kaylee practically stole and made her own when we got home). We had to be at the hospital at 6:15 AM on Thursday so we tried to make sure to get to bed early and hoped Alivia would have enough to eat before bed since she wouldn't be able to eat after midnight. She normally sleeps through the night, so I was surprised that she woke up at 11:30, but figured it would be good to give her some milk and put her back down since it wasn't midnight yet. She only had a few sips, and I laid her back down. About 20 minutes later she was fussy, so I asked Nick to go in and wrap her back up and put her back to bed. The next thing I know Nick hollers for me to come and help him and that Livy had just thrown up. What? Like throw up throw up?? Yuck....! Sure enough she barfed ALL over him and it was chunky and smelly and I didn't even know where to start to help him. I took Livy and got her in the tub while Nick got himself cleaned up and cleaned the carpet where a few spots had landed. It was one of the grossest child throw ups I have had to help clean up. After we got it all cleaned up, I held Alivia and tried to get her to go back to sleep, but she didn't even act tired. After about a half hour, Nick finally got her to lay back down and go to sleep. By then it was almost 1. We were both so tired and I knew I had to be up in just over 4 hours to be ready to go at 6. It was a LONG night and an early morning, but we survived and Alivia slept fine until we woke her up to leave. She never had a fever, so I don't know exactly what was wrong with her. I was worried they wouldn't be able to do the surgery if she was sick, but they weren't concerned since she didn't have a fever. It is such a short surgery and the anesthesia is so light, so I guess it was ok. We got checked in great and we were ready to go by the 7 AM surgery time. We got a few pictures of us waiting for the surgery to start. She was getting a bit restless, so they pulled out a fun wagon that we used to entertain her until they were ready to come get her.
I thought for sure she would have a come apart when they took her at the door to head into surgery, but she went with the nurse without a fuss. So it made me hopeful that she would come out just as happy! Boy, was I wrong!
She was not happy at all after they woke her up. I ran into Dr Ward (My OB) while we were talking with Dr. Skedros after it was over and he made mention that he heard her crying. One of the nurses came and asked if she had a binky or bottle, so we gave them her binky, but I don't think it helped. A few minutes later I could her them bringing her back to us, so I took her and Nick and I couldn't get her to stop crying either. She didn't want juice, a bottle, a binky, a blanket, Nothing! So finally we just asked if we could leave since we did this with Carson once and he calmed down the second we left the hospital. So we left and she calmed a little, but still fussed a little on the way home. We got home and she still wouldn't completely calm down. We tried feeding her, laying her down for a nap, and nothing seemed to work. After Nick took a short nap He too her outside and went on a walk to take Kaylee to school. Kaylee and Carson had stayed home with Uncle Ryan who stayed at our house after work, so we had someone to stay with them. We were home by 8, so we actually saw Carson before he left for school and I got Kaylee all ready for school. Alivia loved being outside, so after dropping Kaylee off, Nick continued for another half hour walking with Livy to keep her happy. During this, I was taking a nap since I was exhausted! She finally took a nap around 10:30 and slept for a few hours. Then ate a good lunch and went back down for a nap at 3, and slept past 5. Once she woke up she was like a whole new person. She was happy, smiling, and talking and saying "hi" to everyone over and over. It was adorable. Even as we were getting ready for bed, we were watching AFV and when she would hear music she would try and dance and turn in circles. It was so cute! She has been such a happy girl today as well, and I really think once the grogginess wore off from the anesthesia, she was back to her old self. And since her ears probably feel a lot better that has helped! We are so glad we did tubes for her, but we hope she doesn't need them again! Fingers crossed!
